Supporting Lion Monitoring: LoRaWAN & GPS Tracking

Reserve Teams Lead Monitoring

For the better half of a decade, reserve teams have monitored Lions with the support of the WildInno technical team and GPS wildlife tracking collars. Lions are Africa’s largest cat, and they range widely, often through areas where they are hard to see. As a result, reserve managers rely on tracking data to understand where Lions go and how they use the landscape. WildInno designs and tailors Lion and Lionness collars with the reserve’s specific needs and requirements in mind throughout the production process.

People & Technology Work Together

Technology alone does not protect Lions, though. Rangers, vets and reserve managers lead the work and act on the information, and our role is to support them. We keep the LoRaWAN coverage running and supply the GPS collars, so teams can focus on the animals. Season after season, WildInno refines our solutions to support reserves as they monitor their Lion populations.

Lions face threats which are unseen without consistent GPS updates. Snares set for bushmeat catch Lions by accident, and poaching adds further pressure on the species. Therefore, regular and reliable location data matters, particularly when reserves introduce new Lions. The same data helps managers follow how new arrivals settle in. When a Lion stops moving or leaves its usual range, the network alerts the reserve team, and the reserve management team can respond efficiently.
