This year, the launch of the Mzimkulu Vulture Hide

This year, the launch of the Mzimkulu Vulture Hide, which forms part of Wildlife ACT’s Southern Drakensberg Conservation Project, has marked an incredible achievement for the conservation and protection of this endangered bird. A collaboration between @wildlife_Act and Riverlea Farm has led to this haven for vultures in the area to land, feed safely and carry on their way.

A second remarkable use for the Hide is the release of rehabilitated vultures, vultures are often victims to electrocution, poisonings or poaching attempts which leave them injured and in need of extended medical care. The Hide is an excellent starting point from which the team at Wildlife Act Innovations can begin remotely tracking rehabilitated vultures, which are tagged and a GPS tracking unit deployed before their release into the wild.

From the time the birds are released, our team analyses the Satellite's performance and GPS data, which can assist conservationists in determining how well the birds are adjusting to their habitat or if they require follow-up care and attention.

Drakensberg Conservation Initiative Bearded Vulture Recovery Programme and the @endangered_wildlife_trust. The creation of the hide has been made possible by Invicta Wildlife, CHEP, and European Outdoor Conservation Association. The support of local Underberg farms has also been crucial to making this important Vulture Safe Feeding Site possible.

"Release the rhino! Just like that we recently established BRREP's 18th black rhino population and topped up an existing BRREP site with four additional animals. This brings the total rhinos translocated by the project to 274.

Note: we immobilise the rhino on release out of the transport crate (depicted in the video), remove the crate, all vehicles and people, before waking the rhino up. This ensures a safe and calm way of introducing them into their new home.

As always, we couldn't do this without landowners that are willing to look after and protect these rhino, our partners @ezemvelokznwildlife , @wildlife_act, and supported by @africanwildlifevets , @heligistix and @rhinorecoveryfund .

From the smallest of creatures to the largest land

From the smallest of creatures to the largest land mammal, the team here at Wildlife ACT Innovations continues to design and develop tracking technology for a wide variety of wildlife species. Pangolins are listed by the IUCN's Red List as critically endangered, this is largely due to high poaching rates, throughout this year we have been working to develop different methods of tracking this small elusive creature using both LoRa-GPS or Added Function Very-High Frequency (AFVHF) transmitters inside small tags which are attached to the scale of the animal. Elephants, on the other hand, with their impressive size and body weight, enable this collar's design to house a larger battery capacity, which in turn prolongs the life on both the GPS component and the AFVHF, reaching up to three to five years. "African Wild Dog news!
We are excited to share that Nambiti Game Reserve has welcomed a small pack of three African Wild Dogs, in collaboration with Wildlife ACT, @ezemvelokznwildlife, and the @endangered_wildlife_trust.
This initiative, under the guidance of the KZN WDMG, is aimed to increase safe spaces for African Wild Dogs in KwaZulu-Natal, and is an important milestone for both Nambiti and in the conservation of this iconic species.
All three members of the pack have been fitted with tracking collars to enable daily monitoring to determine the packs movements, population and behavioural dynamics, ecological influences, and to allow swift response to mitigate any potential threats. The information gathered allows for
informed decision making – both on the reserve and for the overall species, both in KZN and nationally.
The pack was recently released and have been doing well thus far. We are thankful to all partners involved for this important conservation win for Africa’s second most endangered carnivore.

The tradition of tracking wildlife using Very High

The tradition of tracking wildlife using Very High-Frequency transmitters has been carried on through decades of conservation initiatives and practice. This artform involves deploying now-updated technology known as Added Function Very High-Freq. transmitters (or AFVHF) onto animals of interest; be it for conservation of an endangered species such as black & white rhino, or wild dogs or for observations in biological research; AFVHF allow rangers and researchers alike to get up close to their animal of interst. An AFVHF emits a pulse tuned to a specific frequency, selected & assigned to every unique animal. Each individual have his/her own frequency within the reserve and we ensure that there are no clashing frequencies within an area before we manufacture any tracking collar for our client. This is important to ensure the successfully honing in on an animal, photographed above, a VHF receiver and antenna (Yagi directional antenna) are then used to pick up on animal's frequency from a distance reaching up to 15-30km away. Once the receiver picks up on the signal, by moving the Yagi antenna, rangers can ascertain where the animal is by following the direction of the strongest pulse. This allows rangers to narrow in on the exact location of the animal, and in the best of cases, get eyes on it for further observations.

Wildlife ACT Innovations is proud to continue our

Wildlife ACT Innovations is proud to continue our tracking of a Wild Dog pack which inhabits Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park. Over the years, the deployment of combination tracking technologies including Satellite GPS and Added Function Very-High Frequency collars (photographed here) have been incredibly useful for the long-term monitoring of the pack. We were recently informed that the pack has also expanded, welcoming a new litter, which is always a momentous conservation achievement making the consistent dedication to monitoring and protecting this species, all incredibly worthwhile.
